BASIC CARE FOR YOUR SEWING MACHINE

I've been so busy this past week... Even broke down at some point. But I'm back and better in this New week and that's why we are learning how to take proper care of our sewing machines.

Before we start, let me quickly wish you all a Happy New month. I hope you are well.

Sometimes we get so busy that we forget things as simple as oiling our machines. Do not forget, it's a machine and as such the parts won't function properly if its not well taken care of.
Some of the basic things that can affect how effective your machine functions are:
- dust
- rust
- moisture
So here's what to do to make sure your machine functions perfectly.

(1) Your machine must be serviced regularly. If you can't do this yourself, get a professional to do it for you. Cleaning all the parts, applying oils and tightening all screws and nuts are very vital if you don't want it to break down on you (this happens mostly when you have a tight schedule).

(2) how often do you change your needle?  Yes the machine needle?  Some won't change it until it breaks. That's not right at all. The tip of the needle wears once it's in use, that's why you need to change it after every 2 - 4 garment you make. At most, change your needle weekly *at most*.
A bent or blunt needle will lead to skipped stitches, poor tension or can even ruin a fragile fabric.

(3) use the right threads and needles for your machine type. That's why you have a manual, read it thoroughly so you know the right ones for it.

(4) If you have a computerised or electronic machine, I strongly recommend using a surge cube or protector. This will help to protect against surges, storm damage & ‘brown outs’ (low voltage troughs). Electronic circuitry can be costly to repair, & while this is not a guarantee that your computer won’t fail, it will provide protection against many situations.

(5) If storing your machine away, try to keep it somewhere dry & free of insects. Moisture can cause havoc on the moving parts in your machine, as can the tiny feet of insects across circuit boards.
Switch your machine off at the wall or unplug the supply cord if not in use. Power surge is a real threat and even small surges can have major effects on the electrical part of the machine.

These are the basic care you can give to your machine so it doesn't break down on you easily.
Knowing your machine parts are also important that's why we'll have a post on that soonest.
For now chew on this and practice it religiously.
XOXO
